Fentanyl Patch

One of the most common prescription medications in America is the fentanyl patch. This medication has become very popular because it is effective and doesn’t have as many side effects as other opioid drugs. The downside to this drug, though, is that it can be abused if taken incorrectly. That’s why we are here today-to let you know how to use a fentanyl patch correctly!

The fentanyl patch is a transdermal form of medication, which means that the medication goes through your skin and enters your bloodstream. When you apply the patch, you are slowly releasing small amounts of fentanyl into your body over a period of time. This method allows for gradual pain relief with fewer side effects than other medications like morphine or oxycodone because there is less potential for abuse.

How To Use Fentanyl Transdermal Patch

The first thing you want to do when taking a fentanyl patch is wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling one. Next, peel off the protective liner from the adhesive strip on the back of the patch-be careful not to touch anything after doing so since your hands will contain some residue from it! You then apply it gently but firmly onto your skin, making sure all of it is in contact with your body.

Never use a fentanyl patch for more than three days-if you need to take one longer than that, talk to your doctor about getting something different. You should also always make sure the pouch and patches are stored away from anything else so there’s no risk of them coming into contact with other things which could cause an overdose! And finally, never give someone else their own medication unless they have medical permission because this can be very dangerous if handled incorrectly by either person.

All patients should know these instructions for wearing fentanyl patches: they need to be changed every 72 hours unless there are special circumstances involved such as medical conditions and other medications taken by the patient (including those with allergies). Make sure you remove them from their packaging before putting them on so they will stay fresh during this time period without any problems occurring due to exposure to oxygen. It doesn’t matter what type of patch it is because all require being removed at the proper time otherwise serious health concerns like seizures may occur.

Fentanyl Patch Dosage

The first type of patch is the Duragesic.

The Duragesic fentanyl patches are prescribed for moderate to severe pain, and deliver a dose over 72 hours (three days). It should be applied every three days at about the same time each day. This type of patch can only be used on people who weigh more than 50 kilograms or 110 pounds.

Pros:

– Longer lasting relief with less frequent application – Easier to use if your body absorbs medication slowly from an injection or by mouth

– Higher doses available (up to 800 micrograms) because it releases drug over three days instead of one hour as in other types of transdermal patches

Cons: Requires a prescription, must be applied to skin every three days, must be able to weigh more than 110 pounds

The second type of patch is the Duragesic-24.

The Duragesic fentanyl patches are prescribed for moderate pain and last up to 24 hours (one day). It should be applied on one day at about the same time each day. This type of patch can only be used on people who weigh 50 kilograms or 110 pounds or less.

Pros: Easy to use if your body absorbs medication slowly from an injection or by mouth, no major side effects found in those using it as directed

Cons: Requires a prescription, must be applied daily, may not work evenly because different parts of your body absorb medicine differently over time

The third type is the Duragesic-12.

This type of patch also lasts for up to 12 hours but has lower doses than its 24 hour counterpart, so it’s a good choice if you don’t need high amounts of medication or have sensitive skin that can’t handle higher levels of fentanyl. It should be applied on one day at about the same time each day as well

Pros: Works quickly and evenly throughout your body because there are smaller doses dispersed over less surface area, easy to use in times when you’re not able to take other forms of pain medications like swallowing a pill

Cons: You may experience some side effects from wearing this every day (e.g., soreness where patches were placed)

The fourth type is the 72-hour patch.

This type of patch lasts for up to three days and has higher doses than its 12 hour counterpart, so it’s a good choice if you experience pain that doesn’t go away after one day or need more medication throughout the day

Pros: Lasts longer, works quickly and evenly throughout your body because there are larger doses dispersed over less surface area

Cons: You may experience some side effects from wearing this every day (e.g., soreness where patches were placed)

The fifth type is the Xtampza ER Dose Patch.

It should be applied on one day at about the same time each day as well

Pros: Works quickly and evenly throughout your body because there are smaller doses dispersed over a larger surface area

Cons: May cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness and drowsiness. You also can’t drink alcohol when using the Xtampza ER Dose Patch

The sixth type is called Fentora Buccal Tablet

It’s taken orally by mouth (not swallowed like most pills), so it should be used as directed

Pros: The tablet dissolves quickly because of its design which makes less likely for you to experience side effects such as nausea or stomach upset

Cons: There are risks associated with taking medications that way including increased risk for liver damage, seizures and death if more than one dose is accidentally taken at once. This medication also has some serious warnings stating that certain foods may increase the risk of side effects.

Fentanyl Patch Side Effects

The effects of this medication can be highly addictive and may lead to many side effects if misused or abused. We will cover a few of the most common side effects associated with fentanyl patches:

  • Constipation: The fentanyl patch works by stimulating nerve endings in your brain to release chemicals that suppress pain and cause a feeling of euphoria which produces relaxation. This can lead to an irregularity or change in bowel habits, such as constipation. It might also be difficult for some people to have bowel movements because the medication makes them feel too relaxed or sleepy during the day.
  • Sleepiness: Fentanyl is a strong narcotic-based drug and it may make you drowsy at times while using this product, especially if taken on an empty stomach without other medications being mixed with it first (for example, alcohol). You should not drive or operate heavy machinery while taking this medication.
  • Depression: Fentanyl can induce feelings of euphoria as well as a feeling of relaxation, but it also causes depressive symptoms in some people. Some users have reported feeling depressed after they stop using fentanyl because the drug provides them with so much relief from their pain and discomfort that when the medicine wears off they may feel like things are even worse than before they started to use it.

Serious Side Effects

The most serious side effect is death due to an overdose on fentanyl patches if too many are taken at once or not enough time has elapsed between doses for the patch’s ingredients to wear off completely (Source). To avoid these dangers you should always read package instructions carefully and be sure to only use the patches as directed.

In addition to these side effects, users have reported feeling drowsier than usual while they are on fentanyl since it slows down their breathing and makes them feel relaxed. Other common side effects include nausea, vomiting (especially if you drink alcohol), constipation or diarrhea, dry mouth, dizziness, headache and blurred vision.

If any of these more serious side effects happen during your treatment for a chronic pain condition you should contact your doctor immediately because this could be an indication of overdose or another medical emergency that needs attention right away. If it is just mild discomfort related to the drug’s other less dangerous symptoms then try talking with your physician about changing medications before discontinuing altogether in order to avoid relapse .

Fentanyl Patch Conversion

In an emergency situation, knowing how to convert a fentanyl patch to using an EpiPen is essential. In order for this conversion to be successful, you will need the following:

-A fentanyl patch with no more than two hours of wear time left

-An epinephrine autoinjector (e.g., EpiPen)

Instructions:

  • Remove a fentanyl patch with no more than two hours of wear time left from the original packaging.
  • Place up to one inch of epinephrine autoinjector in contact with top surface, and hold firmly for at least ten seconds on each side until fully adhered and have released the adhesive tabs.
  • Repeat steps if necessary. Do not touch needle or bare skin before injecting medication into system as this may lead to accidental drug exposure. If accidentally exposed, wash affected area thoroughly with soap and water then call Poison Control Center immediately (800) 222-1222). Repeat steps until no active ingredient is visible on patches’ surfaces—usually six times total per solution site; there should be no more than one patch per solution site.
  • Rotate the epinephrine autoinjector to expose a new needle and dose for each set of six injections, then discard into sharps container after use.
  • Remove adhesive tabs on skin if any remain by pulling firmly but gently with fingers or tweezers (do not touch applicator part that will be touching skin). Read instructions carefully before use.
